San Cibrao

San Cibrao is a seafaring parish of the municipality of Cervo, in A Mariña Lucense. A village of low houses and a fishing harbour on the northern coast of Lugo, with the islets of Os Farallóns off the shore.

The Maruxaina is lived here. The whole village takes part: the village is the jury, and it lights up the square at the end of the night.

Quick facts

What to see in San Cibrao

The legend and the places of the festival

🏖️ O Torno beach

It is the beach of the festival: 578 metres of fine sand in the urban centre of San Cibrao, with access for people with reduced mobility. In the morning it fills with popular games and at night with fireworks. Here the Maruxaina lands, and here the trial begins.

🪨 Os Farallóns

Off the coast, the islets of Os Farallóns are, according to tradition, the home of the Maruxaina. In the cova de Xan Vello, on the islet of Sombriza, she is said to have taken refuge; in stormy weather, they say she climbed to the top of the islet to bellow and sound a horn. In the days before the festival, boat trips are organised from the harbour of San Cibrao to see them from the sea.

🗿 The sculpture of the Maruxaina

On O Torno beach stands the bronze sculpture of the Maruxaina, by the sculptor Ánxel Cao Quelle, inaugurated on 11 August 2006.

🏛️ The village square

The Gran Xuízo Popular, which begins on the beach, continues in the village square, where at the end of the night the Praza dos Campos is lit up for the queimada popular. On Friday afternoon, the Pre-Maruxaina gets under way in the Praza Nardo Martínez.

⛵ The fishing harbour

The harbour of San Cibrao is the village’s way out to sea. The fishing boats leave from there and, in the days before the festival, so do the trips to the Farallóns.

🎪 The Pre-Maruxaina (Friday afternoon)

The Pre-Maruxaina gets under way on Friday afternoon in the Praza Nardo Martínez: chupinazo, a gathering of Maruxain@s, popular tasting and the Cantos de Taberna from one tavern to the next.
